A Wonderful place to visit locally is the home and work-shop of a local lady who produces the most beautiful works of art and handicraft from raw cotton. Taking in the cotton fresh from the fields and refining it and spinning it into workable refined cotten with which to make some beautiful items such as wall hangings, bags, blankets and cushion covers.
It is absolutely memerising to watch the process from start to finish and a very highly skilled craft indeed!
We took a tour around and learnt how to prepare the cotton, how it is perhaps coloured and then spun. From there it is refined even further, before being woven on the handmade loom into soething truly beautiful. And it is all done by hand!
The tour costs THB 200 and begins with being shown how the cotton is 'cleaned' and 'pulled' though a mangle to separate out the seeds and any grit. The cotton is then pulled, de-tangled, spun and refined on various handmade contraptions until it is eventually spun and wound around either large basket 'bobbins', also hand weaved and made from bamboo, to go onto the loom, or spun onto smaller spools for threading across the loom to create the design.
We thoroughly enjoyed the tour and bought some beautiful items to take home with us. It is something that we felt we would actually enjoy doing again and probably will!
